Bamboo and Artificial Turf - What to Know
July 30, 2025
Hello everyone, thanks for joining me today!
Bamboo is a wonderfully fast-growing and resilient grass that stands out with its unique structure, strength, and versatility. It’s truly a valuable resource used across many industries, thanks to these incredible qualities.
Bamboo is among the fastest-growing plants worldwide, with certain species able to grow up to 3 feet in just one day! This remarkable growth is thanks to its special rhizome system, which helps it reach its full height within a single growing season.
Yet, something so beautiful can turn into a big problem if not controlled.
Hello everyone, I’m JW, and I’m here to guide you on managing bamboo growth and protecting your yard when planning to install synthetic turf.
Bamboo is undeniably beautiful—its tall, graceful stalks add a peaceful, natural vibe to any yard. However, beneath that charm lies a hidden problem: bamboo can spread quickly, and if not managed, it can destroy your synthetic turf and possibly your entire outdoor space.
Bamboo spreads through rhizomes—horizontal stems that grow beneath the soil, sending up new bamboo shoots as they extend. If left unmanaged, rhizomes can invade and damage your turf installations.
If you only want to remove part of the bamboo, it’s important to cut the rhizomes that connect it to the main plant. This way, you avoid killing the entire grove. Use a sharp spade or shovel to cut around the section you want to remove, then dig it out. Make sure to backfill the area and then cover it with mulch afterwards.
To completely eliminate bamboo, herbicides or natural remedies can be effective, but it’s not a one-time solution. Bamboo is tough, and it often requires consistent effort over several seasons to fully remove it from the yard.
If you’re planning to install synthetic turf around bamboo, consider using a bio-barrier. It’s a smart containment strategy that helps block rhizomes from creeping under your turf and causing costly damage later.
A bio barrier is a fabric sheet with small nodules that contain herbicides, which re-route any vegetation without killing it.
With the right tools and techniques, bamboo doesn’t have to threaten your landscape. So stay proactive, and you can enjoy the best of both worlds—a beautiful yard and preserved synthetic turf. Thanks for watching! Until next time…..JW out!
