Critical Steps for Installing Artificial Turf Between Pavers

April 29, 2024

Whether you want to add a pop of green to a concrete patio or accent your yard with stone pavers, artificial grass is a versatile and beautiful solution that works seamlessly with any hardscaping. You can lattice your driveway with turf ribbons or create a stone pathway through your yard, and your turf grass will remain vibrantly green through it all.

However, proper installation is crucial to ensure the longevity and functionality of the artificial grass. If you want to install synthetic turf between pavers in your outdoor space, here are the critical steps for achieving a flawless and durable result.

Ensure Proper Drainage

Before beginning the installation process, you’ll need to assess the drainage of the area between the pavers. If the drainage is inadequate, water can pool and cause damage to both the turf and the surrounding landscape.

To check the drainage, spray water over the area. If there are any pools or puddles that form, there are areas that will need to be addressed. If the ground is dirt or soil, you can move on to the next step of installing a sub-base layer. If the area is concrete, cement, or rock, however, you’ll need to grade the concrete layer or drill holes to ensure proper drainage for your artificial turf installation.

Install the Sub-Base

Regardless of whether your wholesale turf will be installed on concrete or soil, installing a sub-base is a critical step in the process. Not only does this layer aid in drainage, but it also ensures the longevity of your synthetic grass if done right.

Installing a sub-base for turf ribbons is much the same as a typical artificial turf installation. The only significant difference is that compaction can be more difficult when you’re working with such a narrow area. Ideally, use a stamp compactor to compact the turf base between pavers. You can also compact the base manually using a piece of wood and a hammer if you don’t have access to a stamp compactor.

Unroll and Cut Your Synthetic Grass

Once the area is fully prepped, you can begin installing the wholesale turf product. Start by unrolling the turf, ensuring all fibers are facing the desired direction. Typically, the most aesthetically pleasing orientation is with the turf blades facing the property. Once you have the turf laid out, cut it to the perfect size for your paver gap, leaving an extra 1-2 inches on each side for trimming and securing.

Seam Your Artificial Grass Strips

If you’re installing artificial grass on a large area or working with large pavers, you may need to install multiple turf strips along one edge. In this case, it’s crucial to seam the turf strips together carefully to achieve a seamless and natural look.

Start by laying the turf strips next to each other with the fibers facing the same direction. Use artificial grass adhesive and seam tape to secure the strips together, ensuring the seams are blended and invisible.

Secure the Turf to Your Base Layer

After the turf grass has been cut and seamed together, it’s time to secure it to your base layer. Begin by removing the excess turf hanging over the edges of the pavers and trimming the perimeter turf using a utility knife. Then, use non-galvanized turf nails to secure the synthetic grass onto the base layer, making sure to place them at regular intervals of every two inches. If you’re adhering your turf grass onto hardscaping such as concrete, you’ll need to use artificial grass adhesive rather than landscaping nails.

Add Infill and Cross-Brush Your Turf

Once your artificial grass is fully secured and the adhesive has dried, the final step is to add the finishing touches, such as infill. Laying infill will help keep the artificial grass fibers in an upright position and provide cushioning for those who use it. Apply the infill evenly using a turf spreader or stiff bristle brush, making sure all fibers are evenly coated.

Once the infill has been added, the final touch is to cross-brush the surface to ensure that the turf fibers are standing upright and have a lush, natural look to them. The blades can remain slightly matted from the unrolling and installation process, so cross-brushing will make your landscape look its best for your clients.
