PART 2 – Playground Seaming Over Poorly Installed Underlayment
In my previous columns, articles, and vlogs, I have voiced my concerns about the proper installation of underlayment underneath synthetic turf. This is essential as it is placed directly under the turf to provide additional shock absorbency, ensuring children’s safety and meeting or exceeding fall height and ADA requirements. If synthetic turf is improperly seamed over poorly installed playground underlayment, imperfections will “mirror” through the surface of the turf, leading to seam ruptures that will diminish the system’s longevity.
Before installing the turf, it is crucial to inspect the underlayment to ensure that they are installed correctly. I have observed instances of poor workmanship, including playground underlayment with holes, surface damage, and large gaps around the playground poles that were cut in.
Once installed, the underlayment’s surface must be smooth. Seams that are located over underlayment with height differences may eventually tear, especially under stress.
Remember, craftsmanship always prevails. If a playground underlayment is installed carelessly, the flaws will become evident in the completed installation.
Join me next time for Part 3 of the Seaming Playground Series, where I will discuss high-traffic areas and friction mats…… Until next time, JW out!
