What's Under Artificial Grass? The Hidden Layers That Make or Break Your Lawn

When most people picture artificial grass, they picture the finished product: a lush, green, perfectly manicured lawn that stays that way all year long. What they don’t picture is everything underneath it. However, the layers below the surface play a large part in determining whether your synthetic turf performs beautifully for 15+ years or turns lumpy, soggy, and disappointing within a few seasons. The Excavated and Graded Subgrade
Every installation generally starts with removal. The existing sod, roots, and several inches of native soil come out first, typically 3 to 4 inches for a standard artificial grass landscape. The exposed subgrade is then graded to direct water away from your home and create a smooth, stable foundation.
This step is easy to shortcut and expensive to fix later. Skipping proper excavation is one of the most common reasons DIY turf projects fail. Organic material left underneath will decompose, settle unevenly, and leave visible dips in your lawn, so it’s important to be thorough during this step.
The Weed Barrier
A geotextile weed barrier is often laid over the subgrade to prevent weeds from pushing up through your synthetic turf. It’s a thin layer with a big job. Some installations also include a gopher wire at this stage in areas where burrowing rodents are a problem. If you’ve ever seen weeds poking through an artificial lawn, chances are this layer was skipped or poorly seamed.
The Aggregate Base
This is one of the most important steps in the entire system. A 2 to 4 inch layer of crushed rock, typically class II road base or decomposed granite, is spread, moistened, and compacted to about 90% density. This base does three critical things:
- Creates a stable, level surface so your synthetic grass stays smooth underfoot for years
- Allows drainage so rain and rinse water flush through instead of pooling
- Prevents settling and shifting even under heavy foot traffic
For specialty applications, the base gets even more precise. An artificial turf putting green, for example, demands meticulous compaction and contouring, since even minor imperfections will show up in how the ball rolls.
Drainage Grids
Every high-quality synthetic turf installation includes a drainage grid, a permeable layer that sits between the base and the turf to keep water moving through the system quickly and evenly. Rain, rinse water, and everyday runoff pass through the turf’s backing, into the grid, and down through the compacted base below, so your lawn stays dry and usable even after a heavy storm.
This layer works especially hard in pet turf systems. Because dog urine needs to drain completely rather than linger near the surface, pet-friendly turf installations pair high-efficiency drainage grids with fully permeable turf backings and antimicrobial infill. It’s the difference between a dog run that stays fresh and one that holds onto odors.
The Turf and Its Infill
Finally, the synthetic turf itself is rolled out, seamed, fastened, and finished with an application of infill — usually silica sand, rounded quartz, or an antimicrobial option for pet areas. Infill isn’t just filler; it supports the blades so they stand upright, protects the backing from UV exposure, adds ballast to keep the turf in place, and helps the lawn feel natural underfoot.
