Between 1970 and 2010, Austin, Texas’ water usage tripled as a severe drought took a stranglehold over the state, as a whole. While the city currently relies on underground aquifers, Lake Travis and Lake Buchanan for drinking water, the on-going drought, coupled with seasonal triple-digit temperatures, has caused the lakes to fall 28 percent below normal levels. This has pushed two-thirds of the state into an “exceptional drought” category, said NPR’s 2012 ‘State Impact’ project report.

According to the Sierra Club’s Lone Star chapter and Clean Water Action, out of 264 Austin HOA’s surveyed, only 20 currently allow water-saving landscapes. This bill will allow homeowners the freedom to choose their landscape preference, including our booming synthetic grass industry.

Another Reason to Install Artificial Grass – Rebates

Imagine replacing a costly grass lawn with beautiful, carefree and water-wise synthetic turf. Now imagine getting a cash bonus for making the switch.

It’s not a dream. It’s an H2O-saving rebate for replacing natural grass with waterless landscaping, such as synthetic grass, with continued availability from many water agencies and municipalities.

Areas where water shortages or droughts have become a way of life – namely Southern California, Nevada and Arizona – are where water-saving rebates for replacing natural grass are most prevalent … and most rewarding.

Conserving water and $$$

Las Vegas residents who install artificial grass receive a $1.50 per square foot rebate from the city’s provider, with a limit of 5,000 square feet. Multiple Orange County providers are scheduled a $1.00/square foot rebate through April 2013. In Arizona, where rebates for artificial turf have been commonplace for years, Scottsdale homeowners get a minimum of 25 cents per square foot.

One of the most generous rebate programs is offered by the Moulton Niguel Water District of Laguna Niguel, CA. Their users can receive $1.50 per square foot of natural grass removed, PLUS $1.50 for each square foot of synthetic grass installed. This “double rebate” is funded in part from current excessive usage fees by residential customers who exceed monthly allotments set by MNWD.

Rebates are used as an incentive because water supplies are being outstripped by demand; in desert areas, 80% of residential water consumption is directly attributable to outdoor use. To stay green and healthy, a 500 square-foot natural grass lawn needs as much as 185 gallons per day. A single square foot of sod can drink 135 gallons of H2O annually. Water-smart landscaping, such as synthetic grass, guarantees conservation; a synthetic lawn needs no water to stay green, drought or not.

Since the Southern Nevada Water Authority began offering rebates to Las Vegas residents in 2002, an estimated 10 billion gallons of water that would have gone to irrigate lawns have been saved by its replace-natural-grass-with-artificial-turf program.

Water-saving rebates also conserve money for synthetic grass customers. The long-term affordability of an artificial turf lawn is enhanced by rebates that are typically issued by check within 90 days of installation; a rebate of $1.00 per square foot, for example, could mean an extra savings of 10% to 20% for the project.

Your rebate may vary

To learn if synthetic grass rebates are available in your area – and other qualifying details that might make the difference between getting a bonus and not getting a bonus — it’s essential to contact your water provider.

For participation, some agencies require pre-approval; often submitting a plan for the area to be turfed is sufficient, but some agencies mandate a site visit before and after synthetic grass installation. Most rebates are subject to minimum and maximum areas, or limits to the amount of the rebate. In some locales, such as Las Vegas, guidelines include the stipulation of planting water-tolerant live plants along with artificial turf in as much as 50% of the landscape space. In Scottsdale, one homeowner received a $275.00 rebate for installing a synthetic lawn throughout his backyard; only afterward did he learn he would have been eligible for a $550.00 rebate if he had also planted water-smart live plants.

Worst of all, some programs are often discontinued without warning, i.e. when the money budgeted for artificial turf rebates runs out. In 2006, the city of Palm Springs sponsored a $4.00 per square foot rebate for residential synthetic grass swaps; today there is no incentive. Incentives of up to $1.50 per square foot abruptly ended for most San Diego customers; as the San Diego County Water Authority’s website states on its Artificial Turf Rebates link: “Funding for this program has been exhausted.”

“That doesn’t mean the water companies don’t acknowledge that installing artificial turf saves a lot of water,” said Dave Koller, conservation coordinator for the Coachella Valley Water District. “It does.”

Cities and Business are Turning Toward Artificial Grass

Installing Turf in Desert Environments

It’s only a slight exaggeration to say that synthetic grass is becoming as familiar in desert areas as cactus. Perhaps more than most regions, the sunny locals have embraced artificial turf for many reasons. Water conservation, for instance. Consistent and superior appearance in all weather, too. The latest developments underline the advantages of synthetic grass in the desert.

Going off the grid: The University of Arizona football program, which has been playing on natural-grass home fields in Tucson since 1999, announced it will switch to artificial turf for the 2013 season.

Factors cited in the decision include enhanced performance (turf is considered a “faster” surface) and playability (sod fields degrade under constant usage), and cost effectiveness (maintenance expenses for synthetic grass fields are substantially less).

An additional reason, according to a department spokesman: “Fake grass just looks better in the stadium.”

Look, ma! No scorpions: Follow the food chain to grasp this one.

Watered lawns – and they do need lots of irrigating in the desert – attract mosquitoes. Mosquitoes love standing water.

Crickets love to eat mosquitoes. Watered lawns attract mosquitoes, which attract crickets. And crickets are delicacy for scorpions.

So … a synthetic grass lawn means fewer scorpions as a household pest. Or: Since turf needs no water, and plastic grass isn’t a food.source, maybe zero scorpions.

Bad news/good news/bad news for water bills: While the Metropolitan Water District serving most of Southern California has passed across-the-board rate increases to its customers for 2012 and 2013, the Southern Nevada Water Authority announced it will hold the line on pricing, citing adequate supplies. However, low water prices in the desert appear to be a mirage.

At a forum of National Federation of Municipal Analysts held in Las Vegas, famous for casinos with waterfalls in 110-degree heat, the unanimous opinion was that rates will only go up, and up. Analysts predict that the volatility of water supplies in Nevada, Arizona and the greater Southwest will lead to steady price increases of 20% or more in the next five years.

In addition, water providers are likely to renew and expand pipelines, and take on additional debt. The Southern Nevada Water Authority plans to issue a $360 million bond in July to upgrade old facilities and build new ones. A 2012 analysis on water scarcity by Standard and Poor’s concludes: “We believe utility managers will likely ask more of their customers, especially in the form of rate adjustments.”

Stop Wasting Water – Please Consider Artificial Grass

Within the last year Lake Mead has hit historically low levels, leaving Hoover Dam’s backside nearly naked. Lakes have dried up across Texas, swamps have disappeared in Georgia.

Look around just about anywhere in America and you’ll see evidence that water is in short supply … and more than ever synthetic grass is a solution toward reducing water consumption.

This spring in Texas, almost 60 percent of the state continues to be parched by what is designated as severe drought. In Colorado, where Aspen trees are dying because of a lack of rainfall, 10 counties have been declared “drought disasters.” In California, where Governor Schwarzenegger declared years of drought over in 2010, Governor Brown has now rescinded that order, mindful that winter snowpack in the state’s mountain ranges is less than half that of normal. John Rossi, general manager of the Western Municipal Water District serving Riverside County, wryly observes: “Looks like another dry year.”

Where does the water go? It’s a fact that the majority of water used by people doesn’t go to drinking or personal use, or agriculture. No, according to the best estimates, between two-thirds and three-fourths of water consumption is for landscaping – watering the garden and backyard, the street medians and golf courses.

Research by agencies such as the National Weather Service and the Metropolitan Water District in Southern California indicates a natural grass lawn will require an average of 45 gallons per square foot per year to stay looking green and healthy. But most lawns are also overwatered, often twice as much as needed, increasing the subtotal of consumption to 90 gallons per square foot annually. Now consider that as much as half that water is lost to evaporation, and a square foot of sod is responsible for 135 gallons of water usage in a year.

Synthetic grass, of course, consumes no water – zero — and looks great year after year … drought or no drought.

Real-world translation: Replace 500 square feet of natural grass lawn in a backyard with synthetic grass, and 67,500 gallons of water annually is conserved. That’s enough to fill three average-sized swimming pools.

It’s also worth noting that as water consumption decreases, so does the water bill – which is at least a secondary reason for installing synthetic grass.

While gasoline costs $4 per gallon and up; most residential water users pay less than $0.004 per gallon. Still, the math doesn’t lie –substituting artificial turf for real grass in that 500 square-foot backyard might save you $22.50 a month, $270 per year, more than $3,000 over the lifespan of the synthetic grass (not adjusted for inflation). For some people, money is almost as precious as water and becoming just as scarce.

The Impact of Watering Lawns – 235,224,000,000,000 Gallons Per Year

Water is a precious resource, and synthetic grass is a one sure way to conserve lots of it – because, unlike a natural lawn, turf doesn’t need H2O to stay green. How much water will be saved by installing synthetic grass in your back yard, pet turf in the dog run, or performance turf at the high school football field?

Your mileage may vary; each installation includes different use, conditions and climate. But for a quantitative example, let’s choose sunny and perennially drought-stricken Southern California.

According to such authorities as the National Weather Service, Metropolitan Water District and San Diego County Water Authority, a fescue or Bermuda lawn in this region will require an average of 45 gallons per square foot per year to look green and healthy. (Amounts depend in part on location; the water demand for lawns in Palm Springs can be three times greater than in Santa Barbara.)

But wait, there’s more. Most lawns are overwatered, often twice as much as needed according to the agencies mentioned above. That’s 90 gallons per square foot. Now consider that as much as half that water is lost to evaporation. Suddenly, statistically, a square foot of sod is responsible for 135 gallons of water use in a year.

Imagine the visual: the small, 12 inch-by-12 inch patch of lawn, consuming enough water annually to nearly fill the bid of a small pickup truck’s bed. The numbers generated by synthetic grass conserving water are also remarkable: a backyard with 500 square feet of natural grass, drinking 67,500 gallons of water annually, enough to fill three swimming pools. Or, not drinking – nada agua — when turf is substituted.

Does immediate water savings justify installing artificial grass? No. Gasoline is priced at $4 per gallon, and up; most residential water users pay less than $0.004 per gallon. Replacing grass with turf in that 500 square-foot backyard might save you $270 per year, $22.50 per month. Over the life of the synthetic grass, however, savings add up; 10 years’ worth equates to $2,700 less in water bills (not adjusted for inflation).

Now imagine how much water could be saved annually if all the natural grass lawns in America, estimated at 40 million acres, were synthetic grass that requires zero H2O.

Forty million acres equals 1,742,400,000,000 (that’s trillions) square feet. Multiply each square foot by 135 gallons, the Southern California multiplier, and you get 235,224,000,000,000 (hundreds of trillions; next stop, quadrillions) of water that goes to keeping lawns looking green and healthy, coast-to-coast, in one year. And theoretically and mathematically, that much water would fill Great Salt Lake … 47 times.
